Richard Hudson NC-08 reply to a Daily Kos petition I signed

So I signed one of the many Daily Kos Petitions about Jan 6th. The first 3 paragraphs sounded normal.

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Congressional joint session on January 6th to count Electoral College votes following the 2020 presidential election. I appreciate hearing from you on this issue and believe it was my Constitutional duty to object to certifying the Electoral College votes of certain states that violated their own election laws. My objection was not an attempt to change the outcome of the election. To me this was an issue of the rule of law. It is the same commitment to the rule of law that requires us to condemn what occurred on January 6th and prosecute the thugs who perpetrated that attack.

I am sickened and heartbroken by what unfolded at the U.S. Capitol. The violence, vandalism and loss of American lives was shocking and goes against everything we stand for as a people and a nation. I condemned this violence and anyone on the right or the left who resorts to violence to achieve a political end. I have often said, I may have sharp disagreements with someone from the other party on any given issue.  But, the values and heritage we share is greater than the political differences of the day.

Each Member of Congress will have to process what happened that day in their own way. But I pray we resolve as Americans that we will work together to make sure the people who planned the attack in advance and all those who entered the Capitol that day are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. We must do what is necessary so this never happens again. We cannot move forward if we choose to assign blame to score political points or accept the violence we witnessed this summer in cities across the nation or in the Capitol as the new normal for resolving our differences. We must resolve to find a way to come together, condemn violence of any kind, and heal this nation.

The American people need to have confidence in the integrity of our election process. Currently, millions of people do not trust the outcome of this past presidential election because there was incontrovertible evidence of voter irregularity- if not outright fraud - in multiple states. Furthermore, election laws were changed in numerous states contrary to Article II of the Constitution. These election changes included extending the deadline for mail-in ballots, adding unsecured drop box collection sites, and changes to signature verification measures- processes that are susceptible to increased fraud as spelled out by a bipartisan commission on election reform co-chaired by former President Jimmy Carter.

These issues are more important than one party, one candidate or one election outcome. It was my hope that through open debate on January 6th, we could raise these legitimate concerns and identify common sense solutions to safeguard our election integrity. I know there are many who will disagree with my decision to object. However, I was hoping to preserve the process that makes your disagreement with me possible in the first place. I believe these issues deserved a serious debate in the House and the Senate, just as Democrats did following the 2004 and 2016 presidential elections. In fact, now Speaker Nancy Pelosi said during the debate in 2005 that the objections were “democracy at work” and “fundamental to our democracy.”

I want to be part of a bipartisan solution to restore transparency and faith in our election process. I remain committed to working across the aisle on these and other solutions, and look forward to all we can accomplish together as your representative in the 117th Congress.

We will get through this. January 6th was a dark day in our history, but it is a long and storied history. And many more chapters are yet to be written, because America is and will always be that shining city on a hill. We are that beacon of freedom for the world and the last great hope for mankind.

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your views. Your opinions are important, so please continue to write, call, or email me with any ideas or concerns you may have in the future.

I had to share this !
